30 first lines for a local business post

Thirty opening lines for a bakery, gym, dental clinic, shop, estate agent or consultant, sorted by pattern. Change the details and use them.

The first line of a caption is the only part most people see before the text folds. An Instagram caption can run to 2,200 characters, but the opening line decides whether anyone taps "more".

Below are 30 lines in six patterns. They are examples, not quotes from real shops: swap in your product, your hours, your town.

How to use this list

  1. Pick the pattern that fits the post you already have (a photo, a question you got, a change in hours).
  2. Copy the line and replace every detail with a true one from your business.
  3. Read it aloud. If a competitor could post the same line unchanged, make it more specific.

Pattern 1: the hour and the thing

Says what is ready and when. Works for anything with a schedule.

  1. Rye loaf out of the oven at 7:40.
  2. Tuesday 18:00: one spot left in the evening class.
  3. New frames in the window from noon today.
  4. The Friday soup is on: lentil, until it runs out.
  5. Viewing slots for the two-bedroom flat open on Thursday.

Pattern 2: the question you hear every week

Quote the customer word for word. The person with the same question stops scrolling.

  1. "Does whitening hurt?" Short answer below.
  2. "Can I train with a bad knee?" Here is what we do first.
  3. "Is it gluten-free?" Three of our breads are. Which ones:
  4. "Do I need an appointment?" Not on weekday mornings.
  5. "How long does a valuation take?" About as long as a coffee.

Pattern 3: before you come

Tells people what to bring, know or prepare. Useful, and it books visits.

  1. Bring this to your first class.
  2. Read this before your first viewing.
  3. Three things to ask your dentist at a check-up.
  4. What to bring when you drop off a bike for repair.
  5. Before you order a cake: the two dates we need.

Pattern 4: behind the counter

Shows a decision customers never see. Makes you look like a person, not a logo.

  1. What happens to the bread we don't sell.
  2. Why we close at 14:00 on Mondays.
  3. The one machine we clean every single night.
  4. Why we stopped selling the cheapest model.
  5. How we choose which flats we take on.

Pattern 5: a mistake we see

Names a common mistake without mocking anyone. Pair it with the fix.

  1. The wash setting we tell every linen customer about.
  2. The stretch people skip before a run.
  3. Why your sourdough at home comes out flat (it's usually the timing).
  4. The photo that makes a flat look smaller than it is.
  5. One line in a contract that people sign without reading.

Pattern 6: the honest number

Uses a number you can check yourself: stock, hours, prices you publish, days. Never invent one.

  1. 12 croissants left at 11:00.
  2. Two Friday slots left this month.
  3. Same price list since March, here it is.
  4. Open 7 days, closed on public holidays.
  5. Three sizes, one price list, no surprises at the till.

Lines to avoid

  • "Happy Monday!", "New post alert", "We are excited to share": they could belong to anyone.
  • Questions with an obvious answer ("Who loves coffee?").
  • Numbers you cannot prove ("the best in town", "thousands of happy customers").

Source

  • Caption length: Instagram Graph API reference, IG User Media ("maximum 2200 characters"), developers.facebook.com, checked 2026-10-10.
